A 45-year-old businesswoman from Hong Kong has been sentenced to death by the High Court here for trafficking in 926.71gm of drugs at the Penang International Airport.

Lam Chun Wing Joe was found guilty of trafficking in 786.61gm of heroin and 140.1gm of monoacetylmorphines at the airport’s departure hall in Bayan Lepas at 6.35pm on March 28 last year.

Judicial Commissioner Amin Firdaus Abdullah said he had no choice but to mete out the death sentence under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Lam, who is said to have attended Islamic religious classes while at the Penang Prison, was wearing a tudung. She appeared calm.

In his judgment, Amin Firdaus said the court heard testimony that Lam tried to push her way past the Immigration checkpoint and was told to wait in line.

He said when a policewoman tried to scan her with a hand-held metal detector, Lam pushed away her hand.

He said Lam was then taken to an examination room where the police found the drugs in plastic capsules strapped with masking tape to her abdomen, thighs and armpits.

Amin Firdaus also said that Lam had travelled between Hong Kong and Malaysia eight times from Jan 15 to March 28 last year.
