Millie Elder, sentenced to 12 months supervision for drugs charges.

Posted On 09:32 by Reporter 0 comments

Millie Elder, sentenced to 12 months supervision for drugs charges. There was no fine or prison sentence handed down.Elder was in tears as Holmes begged the judge to let her off and go free without conviction."It would be so gratefully received by all of us if the compassion of the court was such that her early admissions of possession of the drug can be taken into account," Holmes said. "If she could now begin the rest of her life without having to take forever these convictions."Elder pleaded guilty to possession of methamphetamine or P and drug utensils and allowing her Auckland flat to be used for drugs last year. Her lawyer Chris Comesky told the judge a drug conviction would ruin her plans to visit her biological father in Greece and hinder her career."She is also interested in a career in the tour boat industry," Comeskey said. "All of that is based out of the United States and Canada."But the judge said there was no evidence that that was true.
"There is no evidence before me of the direct consequences of convictions," said Judge Anne Kiernan. "Such as inability to travel to another country, effect on employment or inability to pursue a chosen career."
The judge said Elder's charges were so serious that she must be convicted on all three. She then sentenced the 19-year-old to 12 months supervision, with a condition that she attend any rehabilitation programme recommended by the court. Both Elder and Holmes had nothing to say to media outside the court.
Elder will continue giving voluntary talks to teens to discourage them from doing what she did.

Darren Rota, 43, who admitted two charges of possessing cannabis for supply and one charge of supplying the drug, was jailed for 22 months when he appeared in Tauranga District Court.Between March and November last year, Te Puke police received several complaints regarding Rota and other associates selling cannabis tinnies to passing motorists.About 7am on November 22, police searched Rota's Te Kahika Rd home. They found two plastic bags containing 32g of cannabis pre-packed into tinnies, utensils, plus $1220 cash, in a flax bush.Rota was arrested, charged and released on strict bail conditions. But at 4pm on December 3, police found Rota sitting in a Volvo parked on the corner of SH2 and Te Matai Rd in Te Puke. They searched the car and found $140 cash, zip- lock bags and drug utensils. Concealed in Rota's underwear there was also a zip lock bag containing 30 cannabis tinnies.Rota told police he had found the cannabis lying on the ground prior to their arrival. He planned to defend the charges, but pleaded guilty on February 19.Crown prosecutor Heidi Wrigley told Judge Peter Rollo on Wednesday that Rota had two prior convictions.
Defence lawyer Craig Tuck said Rota was taking a pragmatic approach, but had hoped to be eligible for home detention.Judge Rollo told Rota that given his "ill- advised" pattern of offending - including offending while on bail - imprisonment was the only option.

Kenneth Allan Burton,Katrina Anne Burton admitted a joint charge of possession of equipment for the manufacture of pure methamphetamine

Posted On 18:24 by Reporter 0 comments

Kenneth Allan Burton 35, and Katrina Anne Burton, 33, admitted a joint charge of possession of equipment for the manufacture of P -- pure methamphetamine -- at a property in Waimate last October, when they appeared in the Christchurch District Court yesterday.Ken Burton also admitted charges of manufacturing methamphetamine and unlawful possession of firearms at a property in Aorangi Road, Christchurch, on November 29. Several other charges against the couple will be withdrawn as a result of the guilty pleas. The couple's children were at both the rural Waimate property and the Christchurch house the family shifted to weeks after their Waimate home was raided.Child, Youth, and Family (CYF) staff alerted police to the Christchurch address, because of concerns about the welfare of the three children, aged from four weeks to 13 years.Police prosecutor Stewart Sluis said the three children were at home when the property in Waimate was surrounded about 8.12pm on October 25.
It took 13 minutes before the Burtons and their children came out, and in that time a lot of activity was seen inside the house, including smoke billowing from the chimney. The remains of chemicals and containers commonly used in P manufacturing were found at the property.Katrina Burton told the police she and her husband never used P in front of the children. When the Christchurch property was raided, a van at the house was found to contain chemicals. Ken Burton acknowledged they were for manufacturing methamphetamine. The van had its windows blacked out and smelled strongly of chemical. Two . 22 rifles, a .303 rifle, and an air rifle were found hidden in the walls of the house. Burton claimed the rifles were for hunting. The couple have been in custody since their arrest at their Christchurch home in late November. Initially they both faced charges as a result of that raid. Their children were taken into CYF care after both the Waimate and Christchurch incidents.Katrina Burton will appear in the Christchurch District Court todayfor a hearing to decide whether she will be allowed bail pending her sentencing on April 4. Ken Burton has been remanded in custody and will be sentenced in the High Court on March 13.
Days after the Waimate raid, Ken Burton claimed the raid on his Waimate property had been over the top.He claimed the couple had been watching Coronation Street when armed offenders and other police arrived with a search warrant.
Burton said seeing armed offenders with firearms had been harrowing for his children.
"For using P you'd expect a run-of-the-mill search. The last thing any child should see is their dad with a machine gun at his head."

Corey Delaney

Posted On 11:55 by Reporter 0 comments

An Australian teenager who held a wild house party which ended with police calling in air support was Wednesday arrested over the incident, which is beginning to turn him into global cult figure.
Sixteen-year-old Corey Delaney had refused to return to his parent's two-storey home in the Melbourne suburb of Narre Warren since the party he advertised on the Internet descended into mayhem on Saturday night.
Some 500 people turned up for the event and after neighbours called in the authorities, police cars and neighbours' property were damaged and 30 officers, a helicopter and the dog squad were needed to subdue the revellers.
Delaney had also refused to take phone calls from his parents, telling national television on Tuesday night: "I haven't really talked to them because every time they try to call, I don't answer."
But police caught up with the bleached-blonde youth, who has conducted all media interviews wearing oversized dark glasses with yellow frames, and he was arrested Wednesday morning.
"He is currently being interviewed at Narre Warren police station in relation to matters arising from the party," a police spokeswoman told AFP.
Delaney, who sported a hooded jacket left open to expose a bare chest and a pierced nipple for his TV interview, has won attention from around the world for his nonchalance in the face of police, public and parental anger.
On Tuesday, he was reportedly relaxing at a Melbourne beach with girls as his step-father described him as a "show pony" who needed to be punished, and appealed for him to come home.
The interview he conducted with an Australian current affairs show has been posted on the YouTube video website and has already attracted thousands of viewers, while his story has been broadcast around the world.
During the Australian interview Delaney explains that the party was originally intended as "just a get-together with a couple of mates" and makes a half-hearted apology to his parents' neighbours.
But he refuses to remove his glasses, irritating the presenter.
"Nah, nah, I'll leave these on, I like them," he says.
"I'll say sorry but I'm not taking off my glasses."
When the Nine Network interviewer asks Delaney what advice he would give to other teenagers thinking about hosting a party while their parents are away, he suggests he runs it for them.
And when she advises him to "go away and take a long hard look" at himself, he replies: "I have. Everybody has. They love it."
