Stuart George, 28, was caught after the boiler at his flat in Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire, went on fire.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard how neighbours called in firefighters, who alerted police after finding the drugs.

Officers seized scales, a blender and vacuum bags as well as amphetamine sulphate and fluoroamphetamine.

The total value of the haul was estimated to be about £1.67m.

At a previous hearing at the High Court in Glasgow, George admitted two charges under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

The court was told that he began renting the flat in July 2009.

'Too scared'
He later sub-let the property, without his landlord knowing, after being approached by an unnamed "third party".

The court was told George was aware the flat was going to be used for the mixing and packaging of drugs.

Following the fire, George was detained months later and confessed to his involvement.

He told officers he was too scared to give the name of the person behind it as he feared for the safety of his family.

Sentencing him, Lord Tyre told George that his flat had been used for a "very large drugs operation" and there was no alternative to jail.

He added that he had reduced the sentence from five years to reflect George's guilty plea.
