Andrew Kochvar told police he didn't want to sell heroin laced with fentanyl because he knew it was killing people.
But Kochvar's attorney, Joseph Curcillo, says his client was addicted, and was selling the drugs to pay for his own supply.
Eighteen-year-old Kathryn Rhoads died Feb. 4, 2007, when she injected the narcotic. Police found drug paraphernalia in her bedroom and text messages from Kochvar on her cell phone.
Kochvar pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and drug charges. He apologized at his sentencing Tuesday, but Judge Todd Hoover called his actions cruel and heartless. He's sentenced to 6 to 12 years in state prison followed by 6 years of probation.
