Bulgaria busts party drugs trafficking ring to Germany

23:06 |

Bulgarian customs have busted a ring trafficking drugs to Germany and seized 62 litres of the party drug GBL, the customs agency said Monday. "The narcotic substance was seized in an attempt to be transported to Germany in a truck... The 62 litres are enough for the production of almost one million dozes of GBL," the customs agency said in a statement. Gamma-Butyrolactone or GBL is a common solvent used as stain remover but it is also popular as a cheap party drug with effects similar to alcohol. The preliminary investigation found that the ring was operational for over eight months, selling the drug to German- and English-speaking clients via a website for cleaning substances, the agency said. The German Customs Investigation Bureau (ZKA) and the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) took part in the operation. Customs officers also seized in a separate bust over the weekend a total of 15 kilogrammes (33 pounds) of amphetamines in a car crossing over the border to Turkey. Bulgaria is a major crossroads on the so-called Balkan drug trafficking route from the Middle East to Western Europe.
